Lydia is the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner of Stewart McKelvey, being called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1992 and the Ontario Bar in 1994. After seven years as in-house counsel – including The TDL Group Ltd. (Tim Hortons – commercial leasing, real property and franchising matters) and The Consumers Gas Company Limited / Enbridge Inc. (corporate/commercial, transactions and real property matters).
Lydia joined Stewart McKelvey in September 1999. During her time with the firm, Lydia has provided counsel to corporate clients in relation to mergers and acquisitions, financings (bilateral and syndicated facilities), renewal energy projects (wind and tidal), corporate restructuring and governance matters.
She is recognized in her profession being named Top 40 Under 40 by LEXPERT Magazine in 2004, noted as a leading corporate-commercial practitioner in the 2006 – 2011 Canadian LEXPERT Legal Directories, named a member of the 2013 Lexpert/American Lawyer Media’s Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers, named to the Best Lawyers in Canadadirectory for Banking and Finance (2013-2015), Corporate Law (2006, 2008-2015), Mergers & Acquisitions Law (2011-2015), Natural Resources Law (2013- 2015) and named Best Lawyers in Canada 2014 Halifax Lawyer of the Year Mergers & Acquisitions Law.
Over the years Lydia has held a number of leadership roles at Stewart McKelvey including serving on the Halifax office’s Management Committee for 6 years, a 3 year term as a member of the firm wide Partnership Board (2008-2011), Department Manager for Stewart McKelvey’s firm wide Business Department (2012-2013), and Associate Practice Manager for the Halifax office’s Corporate Group (2001-2008, 2012-2013). In the Fall of 2013 Lydia was appointed the Regional Managing Partner – Nova Scotia. As of August 1, 2015, she assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer and Managing Partner of the Firm.
In addition to sitting on the board of the Waterfront Development and acting as Past President of the Halifax Trojan Aquatic Club, Lydia sits on the Board of Trustees of the QEII Health Sciences Centre Foundation. In 2013 and 2014, she co-chaired the YMCA’s signature fundraising event “S’Mores in the City”.
Her prior community involvement focused on child and youth initiatives: board member and Chair of Phoenix Youth Programs (2005-2012), 2 terms on the Board of the YMCA (2007-2013), and Past Chair of the Junior Achievement Business Hall of Fame Board of Governors (2010/2011). In the fall of 2009 The Progress Club recognized Lydia with a “Women of Excellence” Award.
Lydia was named one of the top leading women lawyers in Canada receiving a L’Expert “Zenith Award” in September, 2013. Lydia is married to Christopher Smith and is the proud mother of William(18) and Maggie(14).
