Lunenburg Business Plan Review
The Lunenburg Waterfront is a unique treasure and a crucial driver of the community’s social and economic welfare. With the objective of an eventual transition of the property to the community, ongoing investment to stabilize and improve property condition is resulting in enhanced value and improved marketability of properties for sale and lease, as well as preservation of the working waterfront legacy. The result will be a sustainable, working waterfront that is a source of pride for the community.
Five years have passed since the province acquired these properties. Under the stewardship of the Lunenburg Steering Committee (comprised of members from Lunenburg Waterfront Association, Waterfront Development, and NS Economic and Rural Development and Tourism), and with the hard work of waterfront businesses and the community, excellent progress has been made toward realizing the vision of a sustainable, working waterfront. The Business Plan has guided the process. A great deal has been accomplished, but there is work still to do. As the working waterfront strategy unfolds, it is appropriate to review and revise the Business Plan to reflect lessons learned, opportunities identified and a changing economic climate.
Marine Infrastructure
Continuation of a multi-year capital upgrade plan for public marine infrastructure.
Wharf A and Public Park
Work is underway to install a new wooden boardwalk connecting Wharf A to the public park area. The boardwalk will provide important public access along the working waterfront and a connection between the park area, Wharf A and downtown. In addition, general repairs to Wharf A are underway. This wharf is home to free public daily berthing as part of an expanding marina program that will also include additional floating docks. Additional park upgrades will also include seating areas, landscaping, signage and a wooden walkway through the park area. Work is expected to be complete this Spring.
East and West Dory Shops
Work is currently underway around The Dory Shop — where traditional Lunenburg dories are created using the same methods for more than 90 years. Work is expected to be complete this Spring.
Future upgrades to the seawall and decking between the East and West Dory Shops are part of the infrastructure management plan on Lunenburg’s working waterfront.
Wharf O
Work is underway to strengthen the sub-structure and replace decking and piles at Wharf O.
